Chapter Seventeen

S he’d already been expecting the question. She chose to ignore it.

She said, “I’ve had a rough few days. I’m very tired, and I want to go home to my family.”

“I understand that,” he replied. “I sympathize with your ordeal, and I don’t want to add to the trauma any more than necessary. But I still need information from you.” He took a leather wallet out of his jacket. “My name is Jonas Gavin,” he said as he handed her the case. He sat back in his chair and waited while she flipped it open and studied the badge and identification card inside.

She’d been right about his being from a federal agency, but the FBI guess was incorrect. “Special Agent Gavin,” she said, and passed the ID back to him. She didn’t know what else to say.

“Call me Gavin,” he said. “Most people do.” He tucked the badge away and folded his hands again. His movements were deliberately calm and nonthreatening, and all she had was body language to tell what he was feeling, since her gift of empathy was gone. He turned a sympathetic expression on her. “Cage has put you through a lot, but it’s safe for you to talk about him now.”

The last thing Jo wanted to do was talk about Cage, and certainly not to this stranger. She didn’t even want to think about Cage. She’d started her trip into the desert confused, despondent, and in physical as well as mental pain. Truth be told, she’d run off to feel sorry for herself in private.

All she wanted was to go home and take her life back. If Marcus Cage had done nothing else for her, he’d shown her how precious home, family, and freedom were. He’d even given her some good advice and tried to make her face some of her fears. She owed him for shaking her out of her self-pitying depression.

“Marcus Cage,” Gavin said.

Jo realized she’d been staring at the wall and had almost forgotten the man was there. She looked at him and wondered how she was going to get past him. She didn’t know what to say. She didn’t want to lie, and she wasn’t very good at it, anyway. It would be annoying and ironic if Cage gave her freedom, but she didn’t get a chance to use it because of him.

Then again, she didn’thave to talk to Gavin, did she? The fact that she’d been locked in this room was ominous, but it had probably been mistaken zealousness on the part of local cops who’d been under orders to hold her until this federal type showed up.

She stood, and said, “I’m sorry your time has been wasted, but I’m not going to be any help to you.”

Gavin let her get almost to the door before he said, “Your trying to buy him time won’t help him. I think you want to help him.” She heard him push back his chair and stand. “He’s going to die if you don’t help him.
